Gale and Ingenta Join Forces to Integrate Periodicals and E-Journals

NEW ORLEANS, January 19, 2002 – Gale and Ingenta have joined forces to create a new service that allows researchers and librarians to use a single search to access online journals held by both Ingenta and Gale, the companies announced today in a joint press conference. Both companies are leaders in online information delivery and their partnership creates what the companies believe to be the world’s most complete online, full-text journal service.

"Gale’s product strategy is to make research more comprehensive and convenient for the user by seamlessly integrating information in one spot. This is, perhaps, one of the most significant examples of that strategy in action," said Allen Paschal, CEO of Gale. "Combine Gale and Ingenta within a single source and you have an incredible array of research solutions at hand."

Ingenta, Inc. CEO Mark Rowse added, "This strategic partnership allows two market leaders – Gale and Ingenta – to create a market-changing new product. For the first time, users of online periodicals will be able to search across both periodicals digitized by Gale and Ingenta – together the most comprehensive aggregation of online periodicals available anywhere in the world, including almost 10,000 publications. For Ingenta, this represents a major new initiative for 2002 and beyond."

Ingenta’s more than 5,400 scholarly and academic electronic journals will be integrated within Gale’s signature search framework: InfoTrac. InfoTrac, which is in use in more than 100 countries, is best known for its simple, intuitive search interface and rich array of services, including the availability of usage statistics, catalog links, reliable subject guides and InfoMarks, a persistent URL that allows researchers to save searches.

The new service will begin with InfoTrac OneFile and Expanded Academic this summer and will later expand to Gale’s Resource Centers. "It’s a very pure solution for academic libraries that need access to a wide range of scholarly materials in a simple, familiar search system," noted John Barnes, Gale’s Senior VP of Product Management.

Combining the content within InfoTrac will create exceptionally broad access to core periodical data and e-journals. For example, InfoTrac OneFile, which already includes nearly 4000 full-text titles, could expand to nearly 10,000 full-text titles. Total periodical counts depend on the number of Ingenta subscriptions the library holds. However, a pay-per-view option will also allow users to buy individual digitized articles when the library doesn’t hold a subscription. The new service will also be available remotely.

InfoTrac OneFile and InfoTrac Expanded Academic with the new service option will launch within six months, but Ingenta and Gale officials note that current InfoTrac and Ingenta subscribers can activate a link immediately. Registration is free and available at www.ingenta.com.
