Simplified payments, greater payment security and smarter article recommendations in latest release of IngentaConnect

Last month saw the addition of some new features to IngentaConnect, which have been developed in response to user feedback, changing legal requirements and evolving browser capabilities.

We are partnering with content guidance specialists Baynote to provide new "more like this" article recommendations. These are smarter than most recommendations as they are not simply based on "users of the current article also looked at these articles". In fact what they do is monitor the user's behaviour to create a profile which is then compared to other users' profiles and allocated to a "profile type". Recommendations can then be made of other content viewed by other users with that type - even if those users did not themselves look at the particular article currently being viewed. Our intention is to improve users' ability to discover relevant material and we hope this feature proves to be useful. The technology to begin user profiling is now in place, and recommendations should start to appear in IngentaConnect within the next few months.

Also in this release is a new "Buy Now" option, which has been added to our payment processes to allow simpler and more intuitive purchasing of articles. Users signed into the service will be able to set default credit card details or deposit accounts to which articles should be charged; they will then be able to purchase articles in a single click, with no need to place items in the shopping cart. This is in addition to the "Add to cart" option, which has been retained for those users who choose to purchase multiple items in one transaction.

In addition, IngentaConnect now supports the new 3-D Secure protocol, part of the worldwide Payment Card Industry (PCI) Security Alignment , allowing users even more peace of mind when making online transactions. Transactions using Visa or Mastercard will now require authentication through an external verification page before payment is accepted.

This latest release also sees the following services going live, which Ingenta has developed over the last few months

  • COUNTER 2 compliant library statistics
  • CrossRef forward linking, to link users to content which has cited the article they are viewing, even if this is hosted on a different publisher's website
  • LOCKSS and Portico integration to support publisher and library efforts to archive electronic journals for perpetual use
  • the retirement of the IngentaConnect Premium service, as reported in our last issue of eyetoeye. Regular IngentaConnect customers now enjoy additional features including free library branding, and customers on our top-level service, IngentaConnect Complete, benefit from newly inclusive features to facilitate more efficient document delivery.
