10 things you didn't know about IngentaConnect

Many of you reading this will have content which is made available online via our flagship website, IngentaConnect – in most cases, exclusively so. But we bet you don't know the full extent of what the platform contains, and what it is capable of. So we put our heads together and came up with a list of 10 things you probably didn't know about IngentaConnect – read on to see whether we're right!

1. The scale. IngentaConnect currently hosts 29,345 publications, which breaks down to 18,820,761 articles, chapters, reports and other forms of content. IngentaConnect incorporates books, reports, handbooks, magazines, journals, monographs and more.

2. The diversity. Our subject matter ranges from brain surgery to rattan research. IngentaConnect supports the broadest, largest current journal content set online.

3. The user coverage. Over a million individual users, and over 19,000 libraries, are registered to use IngentaConnect, and between them they are creating up to 20 million user sessions every month. Plus we have a broad distribution network to ensure your content gets in front of users no matter where they prefer to start their research – including, but not limited to, Google! Not forgetting our recent improvements to our coverage in China, where we now have over 1400 registered institutions.

4. The flexibility. As a publisher, you can provide Ingenta with a variety of input formats, including basic PDF, SGML headers, and full text SGML or XML. You can choose from a number of output features, including active reference links, fast track publication and author offprints. You can further enhance your content with supplementary data, free trials, watermarking and more.

5. The features. Users benefit from a huge range of services, including personalisation, RSS feeds, saved search alerting, marked lists, COUNTER-compliant usage statistics ... and so much more.

6. The accessibility. IngentaConnect is W3C AA compliant. Ask your developers, but we're really proud of this – they should indicate that this is a Good Thing. Not something you can put together in your backyard.

7. The accessibility. Yes, again. IngentaConnect offers a versatile information commerce system to enable secure but simple user access to your content. Models such as electronic subscriptions, individual article purchasing and issue purchasing are controlled by authentication & authorisation mechanisms including IP, username/password, ATHENS and referrer URL, and purchasing options ranging from personal credit card to advanced institutional deposit accounts. You can even offer automated, administration-light free trials to give potential subscribers a preview of your content.

8. The customisability. OK, so it's not a word. But our hot-off-the-press ByDesign service allows you to create your own branded view onto the IngentaConnect website, so that you can provide all the IngentaConnect features and functions to your users without them having to leave the comfort of your own website. Isn't that worth inventing a word for? Find out more about ByDesign in our next issue.

9. The transparency. With Upload and Validate now linked into our Content Tracker tool, you can follow the progress of your content from the moment you upload it to the moment it appears online – and afterwards.

10. The longevity. We've been doing this longer than anyone else in the business. And once you get past the grey hairs and the worry lines, you can see we're proud to have accrued so much experience, not to mention eager to put it at your disposal. Ingenta is finally establishing the stability you all need of us in an online environment full of surprises.
