Upcoming Publishing Seminars

A short summary of some upcoming industry events and seminars.

ALPSP

North American Seminars - 22nd/25th October 2007

ALPSP is running its next series of US events in Washington DC in late October. Organized by the North American Chapter of ALPSP there will be two full-day seminars both held at George Washington University. The seminars will address two very different topics: one will cover Online Journal Publishing while a second will examine Emerging Business Models.

In addition, two training courses will be held on Thursday 25 October at FASEB in Bethesda, MD. 'Effective Journals Marketing' and 'Introduction to Journals Finance' are based on tried and tested courses but have been tailored to the North American market.

Strategy development and execution: making the most of your publishing business - 6th-7th December 2007

The course is an applied introduction to strategic planning, focusing on the practical skills and essential tools needed by senior managers to devise and deliver a successful plan appropriate for their publishing organization, whether this be a learned society, university press or professional body. The course will enable delegates to match strategy to vision and assess current strategic strengths and weaknesses. Places are limited, so book soon.

More information on all of these events can be found at the ALPSP website at  www.alpsp.org

Caught up in Web 2.0?: Practical implementations and creative solutions for librarians and publishers - 22nd November 2007

As Facebook and MySpace wage their own war for the hearts and minds of social networking disciples, the innovators and early adopters in the library and publishing communities are already forging ahead with practical and creative implementations of the new technology, whilst the majority of us occupy a position somewhere between fascination and bewilderment.

This one-day UKSG seminar is designed to meet the needs of those who want to understand what all the fuss is about, and will provide real examples of how libraries and publishers are using Web 2.0 to meet the needs of their mutual customers. UKSG has assembled some of the leading practitioners in the field and drawn widely from the scholarly communications chain with a deliberate focus on the practical and the possible.  For anyone wanting to understand more fully the possibilities offered by Web 2.0 or to take back real examples to their own organisation, this one-day event is the perfect starting point.

UKSG E-Journal Technical Update: London - 15th November 2007

Many of us working directly with e-journals in libraries or as intermediaries or publishers would like to feel more confident in our understanding of the basic technology.  Managing e-journals and making them available to end-users is quite different from dealing with print, but many of us have moved from one to the other, picking up expertise informally.  Even then, we probably all have gaps in our knowledge and understanding, and the need to gain a proper balanced overview of the technical environment is crucial if we are to do our jobs effectively.

To meet the needs of the groups identified above, the UK Serials Group is continuing to offer its very successful practical one-day E-Journal Technical Update course run by Simon Inger Consulting.  Simon Inger has a wealth of experience in technical and business matters concerning electronic journals.

Be confident that you understand the technical landscape when dealing with e-journal providers.
