HERON Joins Ingenta
HERON (Higher Education On-Demand) is now a member of the Ingenta family. HERON is a UK-based provider of copyright clearance, digitization and delivery of book extracts and journal articles to the UK Higher Education community. Ingenta plans to develop HERON online course packs utilizing its worldwide network of publishers, bringing these services to other countries operating under a similar university framework. The HERON project was established in 1998 and arose from the JISC's eLib Phase 3 'project into service' strand. It was created to offer improved access for students to recommended study materials, using alternatives to the traditional library provision. HERON is currently developing a resource bank of digitized materials for rapid re-use (subject to copyright permissions), in addition to continuing to offer its members experience and strength in negotiations with publishers and other rightsholders.
"HERON's course pack service is highly complementary to Ingenta's existing services," said Ingenta's CEO, Mark Rowse. "Based on our extensive publisher and library relationships, our global distribution network, and our technology and content assets, we have the opportunity to rapidly expand HERON's global activities."
HERON's Project Director, Carolyn Rowlinson, added, "HERON's role in supporting universities in their efforts to widen access and to develop innovative teaching and learning is increasingly valued in higher education, and students are enthusiastic about online delivery of recommended reading. Ingenta not only guarantees continuation of the HERON service, but promises exciting opportunities for development which we believe will offer real benefits to the higher education community."
Stay tuned for future news about HERON and how you, as an Ingenta publishing client, can take advantage of this exciting new distribution channel.
