The Ingenta Library Outlook: Announcing Library Usage Statistics

Ingenta provides usage statistics data to its registered institutions on behalf of publishers who have given us permission to do so. Here, we take quick look at why this program is so valuable to libraries and publishers alike, and what options we're offering our customers.

The reaction to our usage statistics solution has been extremely positive. Many institutions are currently trialing our advanced service, while hundreds are taking advantage of the standard solution. It's already made significant impact on subscription decisions of many libraries, including one of our registered institutions in the UK, whose library administrator writes:

"Having looked at the full-text turnaways, and our Inter-Library Loan statistics, we have now decided to take out a new subscription to European Respiratory Journal, a journal that we have never subscribed to.

What a shame that some publishers don't want us to see title-level statistics. We know that our users are trying to access many journals, but as we don't know which titles are in really heavy demand, we can't decide which ones we to subscribe to. Net result: those publishers are missing out on potential subscriptions."

We encourage each of our publishers to allow libraries to view usage of your titles. And the majority of our publishing clients have elected to do so.

If you have a question about our library usage statistics services or would like to alter your participation, please email your client manager.

The Free Standard Statistics Solution:

Hundreds of libraries have already begun requesting their free monthly summary report - a COUNTER compliant .csv that contains data about the usage of content accessed on Ingenta and IngentaSelect. This file, which contains data for each previous month back to the start of the calendar year, includes

• The usage of table of contents and abstracts
• The number of article downloads per journal
• The total visits and searches their patrons have undertaken during the period

The Advanced Statistics Solution:

Similar in design to the Web-based usage statistics solution provided to our publishers, the advanced statistics package is based on an annual fee and includes the following additional features and functionality:

• A Flash user interface for viewing and accessing data, which enables greater data manipulation and graphical views of results.
• The reporting of additional data fields, such as usage by day of week, hour of day, or specific days and times.
• An automatically generated, monthly .csv summary report, which is emailed directly to the library administrator.
• An archive of previously generated reports, as well as an annual summary report, to be emailed to administrators at the end of the calendar year.

Libraries are being encouraged to trial this advanced service for 30 days. Subscribers to this program will pay $250 on an annual basis.
